God’s Dream: Crucifix
This bronze sculpture was designed as a wall crucifix for St. Mary’s parish chapel in Crescent, N.Y. Executed in the year of St. Paul, it reflects his compelling belief in the suffering of Christ crucified, who died on the cross and raised from death by the power of love to gather all humankind into an offering to God.
The suffering body of Christ is depicted with strength, reflecting his single minded unity with the will of God in the present moment. The flow and posture of his body direct attention to the altar where daily Eucharist is celebrated. Christ’s offering of thanksgiving continually invites us into love relationship with God.
Celebrating the completion of God’s dream, the resurrection figure bears no remnant wounds, but exemplifies the freedom relationship with God. Jesus invites each into dynamic unity to be His body, His presence as gift to God. A multitude of people, personify Christ’s continued presence, make up the body of Christ. There is always room for more to join, bringing fullness to Christ’s Body. The task is to find one’s self inthe Body of Christ, that is to be part of Christ’s eternal love relationship with God.
The commission for St. Mary’s Crescent, an understated cross measures 16 x 16 inches. the resurrection figure is 18 x 28 inches. The combined, welded composite is approximately 22 x 28 inches.
